Some Common Physical Therapy Questions

You surely have a number of questions about physical therapy. Before beginning your treatment at McLaughlin Judd Physical Therapy, feel free to educate yourself about PT by reading the frequently asked questions below.

Physical Therapy FAQs

Who uses physical or rehabilitative therapy?
Individuals, who are in need of restoring injured body parts, need increased flexibility or want to build strength. It also helps to improve posture.

What should I bring to my first appointment?
Bring a list of all current medications and write down any of your questions or concerns. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment. To save time, please fill out the forms from our forms page

What should I wear to my appointment?
It is recommended to bring comfortable, nonrestrictive clothing or athletic wear to help with stretching or exercising done at our clinic. Clothing should also allow our therapists to evaluate the area of injury. Please wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes, preferably sneakers.

How long does each visit take?
Initial visit takes a little longer due to filling out paperwork. Normal appointments are generally between 30-60 minutes.

How long will I need physical therapy?
Until your therapist decides you have reached your desired level of function or that further therapy will not be beneficial.

When should I start seeing improvement?
It depends on the same factors associated with how long your treatment will take. Your therapist will create a treatment plan for you which include regular maintenance visits to our physical rehab clinic.

What is the difference between physical therapy and occupational therapy?
Physical therapy works to restore the function of the legs, back, neck and torso, as well as shoulder region. Often treatment for physical therapy is done after accidents or surgery, along with wound care. Occupational therapy enables people to participate in everyday life activities. Careful analysis of physical, environmental, social, mental and other factors will identify barriers to occupational and physical therapy services. Both physical and occupational therapy programs work to help patients with their needs for physical rehabilitation and everyday life activities.

Will you keep in contact with my primary doctor?
After your initial evaluation, a copy of the examination will be sent to your doctor along with progress notes at regular intervals.

Will I see the same physical therapist every time I visit?
We will make every attempt to schedule you with your preferred therapist desired. All our therapists are fully licensed.

Will my insurance pay for therapy?
Generally, most insurance companies will pay for physical and occupational therapy. However, some insurers only offer limited coverage or do not cover occupational therapy. It's recommended to check your insurance benefits before you start therapy.

Do I need a physician's referral for physical therapy?
While some insurance companies require a physician's referral for physical therapy, New York is a direct access state. This means you can see a PT without a doctor’s prescription for up to 10 visits or 30 days (whichever comes first) before your PT would have to contact your physician for a referral. Medicare requires that the patient is seen every 30 days by their doctor to continue with physical therapy. Check with your insurance provider for specific requirements regarding specialists referrals.
